Honest answers to the questions everyone asks before flying — no sales talk. Written by us, for people going home to family.
For 1–8 weeks with family, an eSIM wins: activated from home, data on landing, and your home number stays active for bank codes. Staying beyond two months, a local SIM becomes the cheaper option.
The rule: 5 GB covers two weeks of WhatsApp, maps and normal social media. Daily video calls home? Take 10 GB. Sharing your connection with the family? Take 20 GB.
Before you fly home: check your phone supports eSIM, install it on home wifi (not at the airport), screenshot the QR code, download offline maps, and keep your local SIM as a backup.
Outside the EU/EEA the roaming cap doesn't apply. Example (published prices, July 2026): Telia charges 169 kr per day for 1 GB in Turkey, or 4 kr per MB without a pack. Fourteen days of normal use can exceed 2,000 kr.
Honest: in July 2026 we sell no eSIM for Somalia or Eritrea. Somali cities have 4G (Hormuud, Somtel), but Eritrea has only Eritel with no reliable eSIM. Best today is a local SIM on arrival — we'll write the day an honest price exists.
An eSIM is a SIM card you download instead of insert. Install at home calmly (5 minutes), do nothing during the trip — and once the plane lands, just turn airplane mode off. The data connects by itself.
Never scan with the camera app: go to Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. If the QR still refuses, choose 'Enter activation code' and type the SM-DP+ address and code manually — both are on your order page.
Hotspot is allowed on Karib eSIMs at no extra cost: one phone shares its network to tablets, laptops and other phones over wifi. Expect higher usage — 20 GB is the right size for a family — and bring a power bank.
WhatsApp is tied to your phone number, not your SIM card. On a data eSIM, your usual WhatsApp keeps working — same number, same chats — with zero changes. The exception: in the UAE, WhatsApp CALLS are blocked by local regulation.
