Outside the EU/EEA the roaming cap doesn't apply. Example (published prices, July 2026): Telia charges 169 kr per day for 1 GB in Turkey, or 4 kr per MB without a pack. Fourteen days of normal use can exceed 2,000 kr.
Inside the EU/EEA the law says 'roam like at home' — your data costs what it costs at home. But Turkey, Morocco, Iraq, Somalia, Thailand and almost every diaspora country sit OUTSIDE. There, operators price freely, and the model is day passes: pay for each day you happen to touch the phone. A three-week family trip is exactly the worst case for that model.
Telia, Turkey (telia.se, July 2026): 4 kr/MB up to 169 kr, then free surf to 1 GB — per day. Packs: 5 GB/199 kr or 20 GB/399 kr, valid 14 days. Telenor sells similar day passes. Outside packs: per-MB pricing — 1 GB at 4 kr/MB is 4,000 kr. Prices change; always double-check your operator's roaming page before flying. The day pass triggers on ANY data — a weather app refreshing in the background at 6 am is enough to bill the day. Cloud backup of holiday photos can kick in over mobile data. And 'holiday week' bundles sound safe but often contain just 1 GB. The most common shock: a family coming home to a four-figure bill without having 'really used anything'.
The alternative is simple: turn data roaming fully OFF on your home SIM, and let a travel eSIM carry the data at a fixed price. Your number stays reachable for calls and texts — receiving texts abroad costs nothing.
Outside the EU: yes, often a per-minute rate even for incoming calls — but receiving texts is free. Ask family to call on WhatsApp instead; it runs on the eSIM data and costs pennies.
Sometimes, yes: for a weekend with light use, a day pass can be simplest. Our table on each destination page puts the operators' published price next to ours — do your own math, that's the whole point.
Because operators change prices without notice, and we refuse to present a figure as honest unless we recently verified it. The date always sits next to it. Spot an outdated price — tell us, we fix it same day.
