Before you fly home: check your phone supports eSIM, install it on home wifi (not at the airport), screenshot the QR code, download offline maps, and keep your local SIM as a backup.
Do it at home on wifi, calm — not stressed at the gate. 1) Check your phone supports eSIM (our free checker takes ten seconds). 2) Buy and install the eSIM; it sits dormant next to your normal SIM until you land. 3) Screenshot the QR code so you have it even offline. 4) Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM but OFF for your home SIM, so you don't surf at expensive rates by accident.
Offline maps for the city you land in (Google Maps: search the city → 'Download'). Boarding passes and important PDFs saved offline. Family numbers on WhatsApp. A couple of shows or podcasts if the kids need to sit still. All of this eats zero of your travel data once you're there.
Bring the phone out of flight mode — the eSIM finds the local network by itself within a minute, no QR to re-scan, nothing to poke. Message your mum you've arrived. Keep your local SIM in your wallet as a backup — it costs nothing to carry, and one day when the network acts up you'll be glad it's there.
It's easiest that way. You CAN install on arrival if you find wifi, but doing it at home on the sofa before you fly means you land connected without hunting for airport wifi. The screenshot of the QR code is your safety net.
As a backup, and for your normal number. The eSIM handles data; your local card keeps calls, texts and things tied to your number. Only remove the card if you're completely sure — otherwise leave it in, with data roaming off, that's enough.
